safety, quality and reliability of the network that supplies your electricity, now and in the future. sometimes that requires us to work on the poles and cables that supply the electricity. at times we cut trees that are growing near to the lines. we do this work to make sure your supply is kept in safe and reliable condition. we appreciate that our work is likely to cause some inconvenience. we’re very sorry for that, and we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum. if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us. why do we switch off electricity supplies? to enable us to carry out our work safely it’s possible that we will need to switch off your electricity supply. we do this only when it’s not possible to cut trees that are growing in the power lines without switching off the power. and if we’re repairing or upgrading the powerlines then we need to switch the power off then as well. how long will i be without power? we will always work hard to minimise the time you’re without power. if your power has to be disconnected we will give you warning well before it happens by putting a notice through your door. this notice will let you know the day and time your power will go off, and when it will be put back on. what can i do before the power cut? • if you need electricity to power for any medical equipment, please contact us immediately • before a planned powercut begins, switch electric fires and cookers off to avoid accidents when the power is restored • we recommend that you turn off and unplug any sensitive equipment that you can reach easily such as tvs, satellite receivers, machinery, computers and other office equipment • about 12 hours before the supply is switched off, set your freezer to its coldest setting and avoid opening the door (put it back to a normal setting after the power cut) • it’s a good idea to leave one light on to let you know when the power returns • charge your mobile phone, if you have one. remember a normal landline might not work during a powercut. what should i do when my power returns? • remember to reset any time switches (cooker and boiler, for example.) • reset your freezer to a normal setting useful information • in extreme weather conditions or if the ambient temperature is below zero degrees we may have to postpone this work • extra support might be available to you if you’re on a priority services register. • you might be able to join this register if you’re chronically sick, elderly, or vulnerable in some other way. working for as a rapidly growing and dynamic work for five years without an hse reportable lost time injury (lti), resulting in time off work for an employee. a lost time injury is an injury sustained in the workplace, resulting in the individual having time off. under health and safety regulations, lost time injury needs to be reported when a worker has been unable to work for more than seven days, as a result of an injury. this extraordinary milestone has been passed by working hard at the things that keep people safe. bts follows best practice for safety and communication is slick between staff working in the field and the company’s office-based teams. managing director, halley mccallum said “safety is at the heart of everything we do. the responsibility is shared by everyone, whether office-based or out in the field. we are trained to look after each other, both in and out of work. and we go by the rule that everyone should return home, safely, at the end of each day”. for a company in the utility sector to exceed 1826 days with no lti, especially in an industry with the dangers posed by tree surgery, is exceptional. “it demonstrates our commitment to safety excellence” halley mccallum added. the company’s approach is to learn what it can, wherever it can. whenever there’s an incident, of any kind, bts’s safety team investigates thoroughly, identifies the underlying causes, and uses the knowledge to reduce the likelihood of similar incident reoccurring. the team works hard to keep the company compliant with health and safety regulations. with headquarters in needham market, works for clients in east anglia, east and west midlands and scotland. in 2016, bts received a gold award from the royal society for the prevention of accidents (rospa) in recognition of the company’s achievements in operational safety. the milestone was reached by staff at bts being aware of the hazards within their work sites and by managing and reducing the risks they face. bts creates a scene graham, our skills and development officer, was at haughley park in stowmarket last week, pollarding a veteran crack willow with estate manager, james. the tree work created a view across the stunning grounds in time for the uk national sheep dog trials. the trials will be held at the park later in the year. pollarding means the tree will grow a new even and healthy canopy that will be more managable in future. haughley park is one of bts’s training and assessing locations. the company carries out complimentary tree work where it can in return for training space. ask us about training bts specialise recently attended an annual engagement day, hosted by distribution network operator, scottish and southern electricity networks. the day was for companies working on scottish and southern’s electrical maintenance contract in aberdeenshire. those in attendance included linesmen, tree cutters and engineers, whose skills are essential for keeping the company’s power lines in optimum condition. during the day a competition for contractors was held, that incorporated a mixture of utility based skills- both practice and theory. it comprised of 14 teams and 14 stations. bts staff were split into three teams, and after demonstrating skills and expertise of working safely around overhead power lines, took first, second and third place. bts maintains vegetation where it grows close to scottish and southern’s overhead powerlines, preventing it from becoming the cause of interference to electricity supply. local tree surgeons provide hospice with free tree work , the largest independent provider of tree surgery in the uk, helped a local hospice to make its funds go further by carrying out tree work free-of-charge. st elizabeth hospice needed to clear trees and vegetation to make space to improve the car parking for those visiting loved ones at the hospice. the hospice approached needham market based bts and asked for help. after assessing the site, arborists tom roberts and chris old volunteered to give up their saturday morning and completed the clearance and pruning work in rain and wind. lorna bradford of the said “it was a pleasure to use our skills and tools to help the hospice, whose work touches the lives of so many in the local area, including some of our own bts workers”. with the tree work complete the hospice can continue to build the car park. st elizabeth hospice is one of the charities chosen by bts employees to receive support throughout the year. megan johnson, one of the hospice’s fundraisers, said “bts truly did an amazing job, and we are so grateful for their on-going support”. the company raises money in a variety of way. fund raising activities include dress-down days, charity clothing collections and taking part in the hospice’s midnight walk. this is the first time bts has been able to give practical assistance to the hospice. large scale network clearance of tree and vegetation project: efficient, safe, clearance of vegetation from 7.5km of overhead power line in one day. location: cottenham, cambridge parties involved: ua teams safety advisors uk power networks project overview: bts cleared vegetation from around 75 spans (7,500 metres) of 11kv overhead electricity network under shutdown conditions in cottenham, cambridgeshire. trees and vegetation growing near to this section of electrical network needed cutting to prevent it from causing defects to the electricity supply in that area. problem: most of the trees and vegetation had grown into the ‘live’ zone: the area around the overhead electricity line in which it isn’t safe to work while the power is on. switching off the electricity would affect 52 customers living in three villages and surrounding farms. also, if it was to continue to run normally, a large school needed electricity supplied by generators. approach: working in partnership with uk power networks bts planned to work under shutdown conditions while cutting those trees that presented the highest risk to the electricity network. with the power off, work could be faster and safer. uk power networks would control the shutdown of the electricity network. the work: in the week before the shutdown bts prepared the area of work. the project took 15 two-man teams, working at eight sites, to cut vegetation to specified requirements and prevent it from interfering with the overhead network. a team from uk power networks ‘dropped’ one of the switched off overhead power lines, enabling bts to fell a row of willow, lime and ash trees. the high volume of work meant bts needed to use all possible cutting hours available in the day. two senior authorised persons (saps) were employed to issue permits to switch off electricity and install additional earths. bts provided and installed a generator to the school to avoid interruptions to its power supply. benefits of working with bts: forward, accurate and detailed planning by bts ensured a large programme of work was carried out with maximum efficiency and in total safety. the customer minutes lost (cml) was kept to a minimum while a school continued working without interruption. planning and professionalism ensured the network in this area is protected for some years to come for a minimum cost and disruption. bts takes on staff following contract award to cut trees in lincolnshire electricity distributor western power distribution awards second tree management framework agreement to , a leading provider of utility arboriculture in the uk, has been awarded its second vegetation management framework agreement by electricity distributor, western power distribution (wpd). the agreement requires bts to clear and maintain trees and vegetation where they grow close to the overhead power line network. this helps to prevent trees from becoming the cause of power cuts and ensures the continuing safety of the public. under the agreement, which is for three and a half years with an option for a further five years, bts will provide tree services in lincolnshire. for operational efficiency, staff engaged to carry out the work will operate from a new office in donnington, near boston, lincolnshire. the new work is in addition to contracts with wpd already held by bts to carry out work in the stoke and telford areas of the west midlands. the company expects to take on around 30 field and office based staff. bts managing director halley mccallum said “the award of the new agreement is recognition of our character and competence. we have been proven to be efficient and safe. we enjoy working with wpd and are excited by this latest opportunity to expand our operations in the heart of the country.” bts is active across england and has operations in scotland. it is the country’s largest independent supplier of arboriculture services. western power distribution owns the electricity lines and cables across the midlands, south wales, and the south west, that deliver electricity to homes and businesses throughout those regions. bts wins gold award in safety bts continues to prove that safety is at the heart of everything it does, with the company being successful in achieving a rospa gold for the second time. the prestigious annual award scheme, run by the royal society for the prevention of accidents (rospa), demonstrates bts’s commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record. to gain the award, judges consider entrant’s occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. bts managing director, hal mccallum, said “this has been achieved through focused hard work and by each employee having a meticulous approach to safety.” two leaders build new contracting company two leading suffolk based companies have come together to form a new contracting business. tbf contracting is formed from the merger of obo scaffolding (obo scaffolding limited) and tms (traffic management solutions limited). obo and tms already work together within the , the uk’s largest independent firm of utility tree surgeons. the merge, and formation of a new company, will increase the firms’ operational efficiency and ability to serve both their private and public sector clients. tbf contracting and managing director, hal mccallum, said “creating tbf gives us flexibility to respond to our customer’s needs and the best opportunity to respond to a rapidly increasing demand for our services across the uk.” “with a commitment to causing zero harm, is a leader in the development of safety standards in arboriculture. “we will take the same ‘no-compromise’ approach to safety in the potentially high-risk areas of traffic management and scaffolding” said hal mccallum. with new, larger offices and improved facilities on sites at boss hall industrial estate in ipswich and the lion barn in needham market, the companies will work in association with and will continue to provide the same high-quality services under a new name. obo, a leading provider of scaffolding within the east of england, was founded in 1976. tms has been a leading uk specialist of traffic management since 2001. obo joined the in 2013, and tms in 2014. 1,500 safe days at bts good health and safety practices at the has seen the company pass 1500 days without losing a single day of work through injury. this has been achieved through focused hard work and by each employee having a meticulous approach to safety. “while we have a dedicated safety team, the responsibility for working safely is shared by everyone who works for bts” said managing director hal mccallum. “we look forward to continuing our commitment to safety excellence”, he added. the company’s approach is to learn what it can, where it can. whenever there’s an incident, of any kind, bts’s safety team investigates thoroughly, identify the underlying causes, and uses the knowledge to reduce the likelihood of a similar incident reoccurring. the company’s safety team works hard to keep the company compliant with health and safety regulations. a lost time injury is an injury sustained in the workplace, resulting in the individual having time off. under health and safety regulations, lost time injury only needs to be reported when a worker has been unable to work for more than seven days, as a result of an injury. the milestone was reached by staff at bts being aware of the hazards within their work sites and by managing and reducing the risks they face. barnards volkswagen, stowmarket project : vegetation management and clearance client: marriott motor group issue leaves and sap falling from overhanging trees were causing mess on sale cars below and was becoming difficult to maintain at barnard s volkswagen showroom in stowmarket. staff sought a long term solution for keeping the area clean. resolution after surveying the car parks, bts decided a majority of the problem trees would need to be cut back. other trees needed removal in order to keep the site tidy and facilitate the construction of a new fence. process using top handled saws, climbing kits, rods, ground saws, a 23 metre tracked mewp and a chipper, two bts arborists completed the project at volkswagen within the scheduled two days. a partial crown reduction was carried out on a field maple in the car park to reduce overhanging branches above the display vehicles. a willow was dismantled and felled using the mewp, with the stump cut as close to ground level as possible. another willow had its upper crown partially reduced. remaining trees, including a mature holm oak, were cut at the base to prevent regrowth and allow ivy to die back naturally while retaining wildlife habitat. benefits vegetation maintenance and clearance has improved the appearance of the showroom. there is less upkeep of show cars because of the reduction in falling leaves and sap, and clearance will allow for the installation of a new fence. fungus of the month birch polypore (piptoporous betulinus) this is a common annual bracket up to 30 centimetres across. it is white, cream or grey in colour, although becomes tawny brown with age. the fungus is found on the trunks and branches of birch trees throughout the year. a young birch polypore is roughly spherical and pale. it expands to a horseshoe or kidney shaped bracket which can remain on the tree for a year or more. by which time it is usually blackened. most significantly, it causes brown cubic rot which produces a brittle fracture at point of decay, and usually results in the death of the tree. birch polypore was found in the possession of Ötzi the iceman, europe’s oldest natural human mummy dating from 5,300 years ago, discovered by german tourists in the alps in 1991. it is thought that it was for medicinal use, as it is known to have antibacterial properties, or to sharpen blades and tools. look out for birch polypore on winter woodland walks. peter brais, bts commercial manager level 3 award in emergency tree work operations bts training site, dales farm, wantisden a need for training due to the nature of work, organisations working with the environment and trees often needs to clear trees that have been damaged due to weather or other environmental reasons. this can be a hazardous job for teams of operational staff. one client requested training that specialised in taking down these types of trees to improve their skills in doing so safely. specialist solution bts training is accredited to deliver courses in emergency tree work operations. the emergency tree work operations course was put together when it was identified that most individuals needing to work on windblown or uprooted trees only had basic cutting and felling qualifications, and were without a medium tree qualification that is needed to undertake a windblown tree course. there was a need for training on how to work safely around damaged trees with only basic tree qualifications. the course covers undertaking emergency tree work operations, including working on trees damaged by tree failure, vehicular accident or weather-related emergency, in both rural and urban areas. bts training recommends this as the ideal solution to those who may need to deal with uprooted or damaged trees as part of their work duties. process the course duration is dependent on how experienced the delegates are and how frequently they use a chainsaw. the standard time is three days, plus a one day assessment. over the three days attendees are shown and will practice securing a root plate, use of a winch, and carrying out assisted felling operations. safe working procedures and risk assessments, emergency procedures, the importance of communication within a team, current health and safety legislation, and creating safe working areas is taught alongside the practical training. skills, knowledge and competent by the end of their time with bts training, delegates have the skills, knowledge and competency to deal with individual uprooted trees, giving them the confidence and techniques to carry out such tasks while at work. they will be able to promote health and safety and industry good practice, carry out emergency tree work operations and understand relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice. fungus of the month cushion fungus (phellinus pomaceus) this type of wood decay fungi is particularly associated with large pruning wounds on cherry (prunus) species and commonly affects the main stem and branches. it can cause extensive and rapid decay producing a crumbly white-rot, resulting in brittle fracture of the affected branches. if the tree has exhibited recent branch loss and poses a risk to people that are likely to come into contact with the tree, it is recommended that it is removed. peter brais, bts commercial manager. bts group awarded framework agreement with new client dno western power distribution awards tree management framework agreement to bts group, a leading provider of utility arboriculture in the uk has been awarded a vegetation management framework agreement by electricity distributor, western power distribution. bts will be required to clear and maintain trees and vegetation where they grow close to the overhead power line network. this prevents trees from becoming the cause of power cuts and ensures the continuing safety of the public. the new framework agreement will run for just over four years with an option to extend for a further five, with services being provided in parts of the west midlands, around stoke-on-trent and telford. bts managing director halley mccallum said “we’re excited to be working with western power distribution, a new client for us and a company that’s respected through the industry for quality of delivery and good standards in customer service. “the award of a contract is recognition of our commitment to safety, customer service and the quality of our operations.” bts works across the majority of england and has operations in scotland. headquartered in needham market, suffolk, bts is the country’s largest independent supplier of arboriculture services. western power distribution owns the electricity lines and cables across the midlands, south wales, and the south west, that deliver electricity to homes and businesses throughout those regions. bts clears trees for new fitness centre bts has provided tree services to facilitate the construction of a new fitness development centre. in the midst of world cup fever, the bts commercial team worked with bury st edmunds rugby union club, carrying out tree works where required on-site. most recently, the company has removed some large poplars behind the clubhouse to make room for a fitness development centre that will provide facilities for the club’s hundreds of players. tree work was completed in time for the season, now well underway. the first game at bury rugby club was attended by hundreds. jane spetch, club manager, said “we found the team at bts to be informed, professional and safe in their work practices”. the new centre is expected to be completed by christmas. bts office staff site visits bts office staff have been visiting utility arboriculture sites to increase their knowledge of what happens in the field. based at the headquarters in needham market, the project coordinators deal with the administration behind the company’s tree cutting operations. as the link between internal administration and the field, they pass work to the cutting teams electronically via tablet computers. head of vegetation ukpn, menco veenstra, arranged the visits so that each project coordinator had a better understanding of what happens on site, and how activities on the field affects what they do at their desks. mandy butcher and bethany bugg were first to leave the warmth of the office. they visited a local shutdown where bts was undertaking tree work around the overhead powerline while the network was switched off. once on site, they were equipped with high-visibility jackets and appropriate safety wear. the ladies were briefed, signed onto a risk assessment and shown around. bethany said “it was very interesting to see how the work we hand out in the office is being put into practice in the field”. bts wins 12 year contract to cut trees dno uk power networks awards tree management contract to , a leading provider of utility arboriculture in the uk has been awarded a vegetation management contract by electricity distributor, uk power networks. the new contract requires bts to clear and maintain trees and vegetation wherever they grow close to the power network. this prevents trees from becoming a cause of power cuts and ensures the continuing safety of the public. bts has been a contractor to uk power networks for more than 20 years. the new contract is for a term of up to 12 years. hal mccallum, bts managing director, said “we’re excited to be selected to continue to represent uk power networks in carrying out this important work. it’s great to see our commitment to safety, quality and customer service is recognised by the award of the new contract.” bts, which works throughout the east, north east, scotland and south of england, manages its operations from a headquarters in needham market, suffolk. uk power networks owns the electricity lines and cables across london, the south east and east of england that enable electricity to be supplied to homes and businesses throughout those regions. in addition to vegetation works, bts maintains, repairs and constructs overhead network for uk power networks. where possible, the tree, vegetation and overhead line work is carried out together to reduce disruption to customers. bts helps local village welcome owls bts has installed owl boxes in a local village. the village committee at otley in suffolk raised money for two large boxes, which will encourage barn owls to the area. bts trainer, graham dawdry lives locally and offered his assistance. using one of bts’s transit mewps, graham and utility arborist, tom roberts, mounted the boxes to large veteran oak trees on the village’s playing field. each box has a clear flight route so owls can fly in without having to manoeuvre around branches. it is hoped that they will be used by a family of barn owls. the next stage of the committee’s project is to create hunting grounds on the playing fields by leaving areas uncut, encouraging owls to take up residence. tony barrett, otley village committee, said “the guys from bts did a fantastic, thoroughly professional job. we had miscalculated the difficulty of installing the boxes, and it would have been impossible without their help”. bts group wins new contract bts group has been awarded new work across oxfordshire, berkshire and hampshire by the electricity distributor, scottish and southern energy power distribution (ssepd). further to recent success working with ssepd on a similar contract in aberdeenshire, under the new contract bts will provide labour, tools and equipment in the oxford, reading, petersfield, aldershot and slough regions to clear vegetation wherever it is in close proximity to overhead networks and services. bts operations director, darren clark, said: “bts has further expanded into new distribution areas, and the latest work in the south compliments the other areas we operate in with ssepd.” daren george, tree cutting unit manager at ssepd said: “we’re committed to keeping the lights on for our customers, and an important part of this is ensuring that trees and vegetation are kept clear of our equipment where they may interfere and cause power cuts. following on from our work with bts in scotland, i’m pleased that we are continuing this partnership across our distribution area in central southern england.” bts advises global vehicle provider bts fleet operations manager, steve hood, was recently invited by leading commercial vehicle provider, volkswagen commercial vehicles, to support in developing market leading aftersales solutions for fleet customers. steve’s insight and expertise was used to directly advise volkswagen’s van centre network on the wants and needs of modern day fleet departments and how they can offer a better service to companies like bts. steve holds over two decades of experience in managing fleets and commercial vehicles, and it was because of this knowledge that volkswagen sought his and other local fleet manager’s advice to help it identify the needs of businesses with large fleet departments. the recorded interview with steve was used by volkswagen commercial vehicles to present to heads of business across the volkswagen commercial vehicles van centre network as an example of what large fleet departments expect and require from companies like volkswagen commercial vehicles. touched by tablet success bts surveyor, emily jane stearn, is the company’s first employee to use a new tablet-based computer system to deliver a completed consent form. introduced in june, the new tablet technology is replacing paper forms that are used to record that consent is granted, and to give authority to access the property to carry out vegetation works as agreed on the form. emily is one of 14 surveyors at bbts who have been given tablet computers to capture information in the field in an electronic form, rather than using the traditional paper based forms. to mark the milestone, bts it programme manager jeff hume presented emily with a bottle of champagne. about the project milestone, jeff said “it has taken many weeks of effort from many people at bts to get the u-consent electronic consenting forms up and running. the electronic consent form that emily submitted was the first and thousands more that will be completed over the coming months and years”. recording the details electronically enables information to be sent immediately to the office administration systems. as well as being far more efficient, this reduces waste. bts maintains trees in many parts of the country on behalf of electricity distribution companies, the environment agency and private landowners. where trees grow close to electricity permission is sought from its owner to cut them clear of the line. communications manager andrew watts landline: 01449 720 330 mobile: 07880 030 454 email: [email protected] bts group – head office bts group the lion barn, maitland road, needham market,
